Artists That Inspire Me

When I feel muse-less I like to look around the internet for inspiration. There are so many amazing polymer clay artists out there that it’s not hard to find a way to lure my muse back home. Here are a few of the artists who get my creative juices flowing.

Elise Winters for her use of color

Kathleen Dustin for her imagination

Sarajane Helm for her canework and beads

Julie Picarello for her colorful Mokume Gane

Judy Dunn for her use of patterns and shapes

Jeffery Lloyd Dever for his funky designs

Karen Lewis for her canework and bead designs

Jana Robets Benzon for her kaleidoscope canes

Kim Cavender for her organic designs

Tory Hughes for her imitative techniques

I could go on like this all day, so I will stop. LOL As I said, these are just a handful of amazing artists that inspire me to continue claying and hopefully one day I will find my own special style like they have. Many thanks to them all. 🙂

Texture – It’s everywhere

I love using texture in my work. Not only does it hide those pesky fingerprints, but it adds an interesting element to the piece.

Textures can be created in a multitude of ways. For example, you can use the obvious rubber stamps and texture sheets to create a zillion different patterns. Another fun way to find texture is in nature. A rough stone, a leaf or a piece of bark can make quite an impression. I’ve even used wadded up paper and 80 grit sandpaper on some of my work. Recently I saw someone had rolled raw clay beads in rock salt to imitate the look of lava. The rock salt just rinses away after baking. Amazing idea !

How about looking in your child’s toy box? There are some great designs on the tires of those Hot Wheels and Lego blocks have those simple dot patterns. Who knows what other textures are lurking in there.

Now one you may not think of. Take a look at the bottom of your shoes. 🙂

Here are some examples of how I have used texture in my work.

Here a few texture examples I found online
